You Moved To Be In a Certain School District: Can Your Child Get In?

The answer is: Not necessarily.

Your son or daughter is old enough to go to school. But is the public school in your neighbourhood good enough? You don’t think it is. So you’ve hired a Realtor and she finds you a condo in a great neighbourhood, in your price range and with a very good public school right down the street!

You make an offer and it’s accepted! Closing date is June 1st, plenty of time for the family to become adjusted to the new place before school starts.

You go to the school you’ve heard so much about to register your young one. These are the dreaded words you hear: “Sorry. There’s no room at this school for your child. She will have to be bused to another school.” What?????!!!! This is the reason you bought the condo! To be in that school district!

Unfortunately, we’re hearing this more and more. There are certain areas in Toronto where the population density has skyrocketed thanks to the “vertical boom”. This has caused a crowding problem in some of Toronto’s schools. Make sure your Realtor does his or her due diligence. Make sure they do more than find a good public school in the area you can afford. Make sure they check out that the school you want has room for your child.
